HiPP-Lab

System Design

The HiPP-Lab provides a total solution for APPES. The design takes advantage of Scienta Omicron's vast experience in the field of electron spectroscopy. Since a turnkey solution with single vendor performance responsibility is being offered, critical issues e.g. magnetic shielding are addressed throughout design and manufacturing. All Scienta Omicron systems are upgradeable and extendable to multi-technique systems. Paths for adding for example SPM and MBE capability are available to make the APPES system even more competitive as a scientific tool.

The HiPP-Lab is a state of art ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy (APPES) system optimized for speed to result by its stability, simplicity and user friendly design. The system is based on the most modern concepts of APPES, including features like exchangeable chamber and high throughput analyser swift acceleration mode. Central in the idea of HiPP-Lab is the ability to be able to optimize the setup for different measurements, taking advantage of the ease to exchange chambers while maintaining the core components of the system, the swift acceleration and image resolving APPES analyser and Al Kα monochromized X-ray source. The base module can easily be interfaced with other system modules like preparation chambers or be a part of a cluster type system.

HiPP-3

The System Concept

The system is a customizable surface analysis solution for highest performance APPES studies especially developed for the HiPP analysers and XM1200 X-ray source. Scienta Omicron has a long tradition of system design and will therefore fully guarantee the performance of the APPES solution.

The system is designed and optimized for best performance with lab or synchrotron based laser, UV and X-ray sources. Scienta Omicron systems are also prepared for multi-technique upgrades with possibilities of adding glove box, SPM and MBE capabilities to the system. The system configuration and layout will be developed and upon request updated in collaboration with the customer during the lifetime of the system.

The HiPP-3 analyser

The S HiPP-3 analyser features a newly developed technology for outstanding imaging XPS at ambient conditions with a spatial and angular mode. In addition, the newly developed Swift Acceleration Mode enables unparalleled transmission, with countrates improved by up to a factor of e.g. 10 for Ag 3d using Al-Kα excitation (Ref: Edwards NIMA 785 (2015) 191).

Analysis chamber

The chamber is specially designed for ultimate performance using the HiPP-3 analyser in combination with a XM1200 X-ray source. The chamber is cylindrical and based on a 200 mm chamber diameter. It includes the window that separates the high pressure region in the analysis chamber from the vacuum of the X-ray source. The window is designed for venting of the chamber to atmospheric pressure while maintaining the vacuum in the X-ray source.

The chamber will be made of mu-metal (Flanges: AISI 316 LN) and have up to 12 ports (including analyzer and X-ray ports) and has a guaranteed residual magnetic field lower than 1 microTesla at the measurement point.

Frame

The frame is an essential point in the modular concept of the system. It enables ease of use of the setup, e.g. exchange of analysis chamber and removal of analyser for sample access.

Analysis chamber vacuum system

An effective pumping is of utmost importance for APPES for creating a steep pressure gradient in the analyser, maintaining good vacuum in the monochromator, and effectively pump away the gas load after finished experiments in the exchangeable chamber.

The HiPP-Lab offers a well-balanced pumping base package including analyser pumping and ease of gas evacuation from analysis chamber. The HiPP-Lab also offers one manual gas inlet version as well as a fully automatic version.

Software

Acquisition Software

The Scienta Omicron APPES analysers are delivered with SES, a measurement and optimization software which runs on Windows. A modern, well-performing computer which meets the requirements of SES is delivered with the spectrometer. The computer also comes with Igor Pro installed for spectrum analysis.

SES supports measurement of several common and rare methods such as EDC, XPS, UPS and ARPES, CIS, CFS and NEXAFS (the latter three requiring monochromator control which is possible to integrate into SES). It can measure these either at a fixed energy or by sweeping the energy, and it displays acquired data continuously during acquisition. The many energy and angular channels provided by the Scienta 2D MCP/CCD detector system are exploited to the fullest in the acquisition software ensuring fast and effective measurements.

SES contains functionality to perform automated series of measurements with individual parameters. The SES sequence manager allows the user to set up for example a multi-point/angle analysis series controlling both spectrometer and manipulator, if motorization option for the manipulator is chosen.

The SES software is built on a modular concept to encourage development of custom add-ons. The Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for the SES add-ons, such as synchrotron monochromator, are fully documented. Furthermore, Scienta Omicron will give support to development using these APIs. Developing e.g. an add-on to SES which performs pulsed heating of a sample, in combination with data acquisition is an example of possible customization.

SES saves measurement data in three formats: Igor Binary Wave (.ibw), Igor Packed Experiment Template (.pxt) and a well defined proprietary text format (.txt). The Igor file formats are native to WaveMetrics Igor Pro. These formats are also accepted by analysis packages such as CasaXPS.

Mistral System Controller

Scienta Omicron systems are delivered with the Mistral system controller, a programmable logic controller (PLC) with intuitive, user-friendly touch screen control for vacuum system control. This allows complete and fast status overview of valves, pumps, pressures and bake out (optional). The PLC offers several interlocks to maintain a safe operation of the system at all times. The bake-out procedure is easily programmed and pre-configured in the PLC.

The UHV system includes a 19" instrumentation rack housing all control electronics. Mistral also ensures upgrade paths to include additional components, everything from simple sources to advanced SPM modules, in the system and interlock chain.
