WEBINARS

  • Oct/2303 24/10/2303 | 12:00 Webinar: Sputtering in PVD Sputter deposition is a physical vapour deposition (PVD) method of depositing thin films by sputtering material from a 'target', then depositing it onto a 'substrate'. Magnetron sputtering applies a magnetic field around the target in order to energize argon atoms for bombarding the target.

The Fission magnetron sputtering source enables rapid, contaminant-free deposition of metal or dielectric films in the HEX modular deposition system. Water-cooling and gas connections are made using quick-release connectors, removing the need for specialist tools  to dismount the source and eliminating the hazard and inconvenience of draining coolant-water each time the source is removed from the chamber. Source mounting is also efficient and simple, without the need for specialist tools.

The Fission source can be operated  in DC mode for conducting materials  and RF mode for insulating materials.  Gas introduction is through the gas hood, allowing a higher partial pressure to be achieved near the target surface and thereby reducing the overall chamber pressure required during deposition. The source can be equipped with manual or motor-driven shutters and can be controlled using our  PC automation option.

Reactive sputtering can be enabled either by introducing additional gases directly with the sputtering gas or with a separate gas feed in the chamber. Magnetic materials can be sputtered  using an optional strong magnet set  which allows targets up to 1mm thick  to be sputtered. The Fission source can be used to sputter all (solid) metals, insulators and semiconductors. Multiple sources may be used in one system in order to grow multilayer or composite material films.

We will also show the versatility of the Spinsolve Multi X probes, which can automatically switch between several X-nuclei like 13C, 31P, 7Li, 29Si, and others enabling advanced multinuclear measurements to be made without operator intervention.

Included in the webinar will be real world examples provided by our many customers in research, pharmaceutical, forensics and synthetic chemistry describing how useful information can be extracted from the NMR spectra they acquire.
  • Jun/2021 09/06/2021 | 10:00 Webinar - X-ray ptychography: from the synchrotron to your laboratory Speakers:
Dr Darren Batey, Beamline scientist at I13-1, Diamond Light Source.
Dr Silvia Cipiccia, Lecturer in the Advanced X-ray Imaging group, University College London.

Since its first demonstration in 2007, X-ray ptychography has revolutionised nanoscale phase contrast imaging at large-scale synchrotron sources. The technique produces quantitative phase images with the highest possible spatial resolutions (10’s nm) – going well beyond the conventional limitations of the available X-ray optics – and has wide reaching applications across the physical and life sciences.
We present here the first demonstration that X-ray ptychography can be performed in a laboratory setting under the correct experimental conditions. The results not only prove the robustness of the ptychographic imaging but represent a first step toward unlocking a powerful imaging technique to a wider community. By increasing its accessibility, X-ray ptychography is now likely to become a new everyday tool for research, education and diagnostic.

  • May/2021 12/05/2021 | 15:00 Webinar - Exploring sub-Kelvin measurements with kiutra’s cryogen-free continuous ADR cryostats jpgFor the past few decades, dilution refrigerators and He3 cryostats have been the mainstay in achieving sub-Kelvin temperatures. Although these devices offer excellent performance at milli-Kelvin temperatures, they are often large and complex systems which require intensive maintenance efforts and experienced operator personnel.

Kiutra’s goal was to create an improved sub-Kelvin experience by providing turn-key cryostats that did not use He3. These cryostats are based on a completely cryogen-free magnetic refrigeration technique allowing the creation of compact and user-friendly cryostats that provide continuous operation from milli-Kelvin to room temperature.

Furthermore, kiutra’s innovative puck-based sample exchange mechanism allows for fast sample preparation and loading, as well as exceptionally short sample cooldown times. These features help to accelerate material characterization and the development and testing of quantum hardware.

In this webinar we would like to introduce Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigeration (ADR) and continuous ADR (cADR) and explain their implementation in kiutra’s cryostats.

In addition to a brief overview of our cryostat products, we will demonstrate how to operate our L-Type Rapid cryostat, and also how to carry out a low-temperature transport measurement using this rapid testing system.

  • Apr/2021 28/04/2021 | 10:00 Webinar - Solving structural biology challenges with the home-lab capabilities at the Centre of Molecular Structure
The Centre of Molecular Structure (CMS) provides services and access to state-of-art instruments, which cover a wide range of techniques required by not only structural biologists. CMS operates as part of the Czech Infrastructure for Integrative Structural Biology (CIISB), and European infrastructures Instruct-ERIC and MOSBRI. CMS is organized in 5 core facilities: CF Protein Production , CF Biophysics, CF Crystallization of proteins and nucleic acids, CF Diffraction techniques, and CF Structural Mass Spectrometry.
CF Diffraction techniques employs two laboratory X-ray instruments equipped with high flux MetalJet X-ray sources: a single crystal diffractometer D8 Venture (Bruker) and a small angle X-ray scattering instrument SAXSpoint 2.0 (Anton Paar). The configurations of both instruments represent top tier of possibilities of laboratory instrumentation. Apart from standard applications, the instruments are also extended for advanced experiments such as in-situ crystall diffraction, crystal dehydration, in-situ UV-Vis spectroscopy or SEC-SAXS. The setups enable easy access and fast turn-around of samples under different conditions, but also collection of high quality end-state data without further need for synchrotron data collection in many cases. CF Diffraction provides services in synergy with the other Cfs on-site, therefore scientific questions can be quickly answered as they emerge from the experiments.

  • Apr/2021 21/04/2021 | 12:00 Webinar - Water dynamics in polysaccharide based hydrogel microparticles Abstract

Polysaccharides are sugar derivative biopolymers found in natural sources like microorganisms, seaweeds, plants and animals. Mesoporous hydrogels prepared by the cross-linking of polysaccharides both utilize from biocompatibility and hydrophilicity of polysaccharides, at the same time show mechanical stiffness and can absorb water much larger than their dry mass. These unique features, when combined with their size advantageous and enhanced surface-to-volume ratio make polysaccharide based hydrogel microparticulate systems very promising materials for sustained drug delivery, tissue engineering and food applications. Field Cycling NMR relaxometry, being a technique sensitive to confinement effects can be used to investigate the dynamics of water confined on the surface and inside the pores of such hydrogel microparticles. In this presentation, on the basis of FFC NMR relaxometry results complemented with NMR diffusometry measurements the topic will be discussed for several examples of polysaccharide based microgels.

  • Apr/2021 14/04/2021 | 10:00 Webinar: How 3D virtual histology based on µCT helps to understand Covid-19 Severe progression of Covid-19 is frequently accompanied by lethal respiratory failure. The underlying lung injury can already be detected by radiographic chest imaging and clinical computed tomography (CT). However, in order to study disease mechanisms at the cellular level, a much higher resolution is required. For this purpose, phase-contrast X-ray CT has been used such that three-dimensional imaging tasks can be performed non-destructively on lung autopsies or biopsies. The team at the University of Göttingen has implemented this both with synchrotron radiation and at their in-house MetalJet source to investigate tissue samples from Covid-19 patients, as well as healthy control samples. In this talk, Professor Salditt will present the status of the project, the pathological relevance, and the technical challenges concerning data acquisition, reconstruction and analysis. He will finish with an outlook on how 3D virtual histology and patho-histology can be further developed and be applied to biomedical research, with an emphasis on compact laboratory instrumentation.

  • Apr/2021 01/04/2021 | 12:00 Webinar - A New Concept in Semiconductor Material/Device Characterization that Combines the Benefits of Both DC and AC Sourcing and Measuring Traditionally, material/device characterization applications have required a combination of specialized DC and AC instruments – often resulting in complicated setups that also require highly skilled operators to integrate and operate equipment of mixed brands, computer interfaces, and types. Such setups often employ long cables between instruments and the sample, and as channel counts increase, so do the challenges of minimizing system noise and ensuring channel-to-channel timing and reference frequency synchronization.

This webinar will explore a new approach: the use of a highly synchronized, AC + DC sourcing and measurement system that utilizes remote analog modules for optimum sensitivity and noise rejection to accurately characterize samples. The instrument architecture for directing low-level measurements from DC to 100 kHz ensures inherently synchronized data from 1 to 3 measurement channels which can be coordinated with up to 3 source channels or an external reference signal. • Mar/2021 10/03/2021 | 12:00 Webinar - NMR relaxation in partially saturated pores: applications to cement materials, carbon xerogels and silica colloidal crystals Nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation studies of liquids confined inside porous materials mostly refer to saturated pores. However, in many practical circumstances the pores are only partially saturated with liquids and this dramatically influences the NMR relaxation data. For describing the effective relaxation rate, under partially saturated conditions, a two-phase exchange model was developed. In this model it was assumed that the molecules located on the internal surface of the pores only partially participate in the exchange process, and their participation depends on liquid distribution inside pores. Thus, the model allows extracting of information about liquid morphology inside porous systems and reveals a correlation between liquid morphology and the surface affinity. The model was applied to study liquid morphology inside cement paste pores, carbon xerogels and silica colloidal crystals.

  • Jan/2021 13/01/2021 | 12:00 Webinar - NMR spin relaxation in viscous liquids Starting with the seminal work of Bloembergen, Purcell and Pounds in 1948, NMR relaxometry -among many other issues -attempted to access the spectral density of viscous liquids, systems which undergo a glass transition. This extraordinary phenomenon attracted the research activities of many other spectroscopic methods which provided insight into the evolution of the spectral density upon super-cooling a liquid, in particular, demonstrating that the spectral density is highly non-Debye. In other words, the correlation function is highly stretched. Yet, understanding is still incomplete. In my talk I will give an overview of the role NMR relaxometry can play in this context. Starting with the classic 1H dispersion measurements by Noack and co-workers to the studies of 2H relaxation and back to recent dispersion measurements applying the field cycling technique I will demonstrate the potential of NMR relaxometry. Studying both, T1(T) and T2(T) is an important ingredient. Up to what extent can NMR contribute to address the important question whether there exists a universal relaxation stretching in molecular liquids? An issue which recently has been raised once again. And how far are we to simulate those NMR relaxations? Informações: https://videoconf-colibri.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIoc-CurjopHNH0imhtd6ztkNet6g5ASRqk
  • Dec/2020 16/12/2020 | 12:00 Webinar - Characterisation of MRI contrast agents using NMR relaxometry M. Botta
University of Eastern Piedmont “Amedeo Avogadro”, Alessandria, Italy

This  seminar  aims  to  provide  a  broad  overview  of  the  potential  of  NMR relaxometry  for  the characterization  of  metal-based  MRI  contrast  agents  through  selected  examples  taken  from  the literature or from our own data. We will analyse the role of different structural and dynamic parameters on 1H relaxivity and on the shape of the 1H Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation Dispersion (NMRD) profiles.

The amplitude and shape of the profiles is affected by the number of water molecules coordinated to the metal ion, the water exchange rate, the rotational correlation time of the complex and therelaxation of the electron spin. As a result, 1H NMRD profiles represent a powerful tool for the understanding of the properties of MRI contrast agent at the molecular level and for the design of new probes of improved efficiency for applications in clinical and pre-clinical studies.

  • Dec/2020 09/12/2020 | 12:00 Webinar - Getting the most from fast-field cycling NMR: the 3-tau model The 3τ model allows interpretation of fast-field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance measurements from fluid-filled porous materials of commercial and technological significance such as hydrocarbon rocks, silicates and glasses, plasters, cementitious material, clays, and catalysts. Fits to FFC-NMR dispersion curves using the 3τ model yields five material properties, plus additional related physical quantities. In 2017, two back-to-back Phys. Rev. E articles validated the model against varied porous materials. Fitting software is now freely available to researchers.
The 3τ model was extended to systems withfluid confined to sub-10nm planar, channel and closed pores in 2018. This model enhancement is as yet untested. Questions also remain as to whether the model is applicable to soft materials.
In my presentation, the limitations, strengths and weaknesses of the 3τ model are critically appraised. The validity of the model in predicting physical quantities beyond the three time constants and the prospects for extended the model beyond the current applications are explored.

From new materials, we demand not only high performance but also a low impact on natural habitat. The ionogels are one example of solidification methods for electrolytes, which allows us to obtain a functional material with the potential to use in a wide range of electrochemical applications. Its functionality arises from the fact that used low molecular weight gelators to create the gel phase allows thermally reversible solidification of electrolytes. Our investigations [1, 2, 3] found that such materials based on the monosaccharide derivatives display superior ionic conductivity. To understand and predict these systems' properties, it is crucial to know the interactions and dynamics on the molecular level between the solid gelator matrix and the electrolyte solution. We have used the FFC NMR and PFG NMR diffusometry and optical spectroscopy methods to explain the observed aggregation enhanced ionic conductivity effect (AEIC).

  • Nov/2020 11/11/2020 | 15:00 Webinar - Direct write lithography solutions using MicroWriter ML®3 from Durham Magneto-Optics The MicroWriter ML3 photolithography tool: a versatile benchtop instrument for the rapid fabrication of samples with a wide range of applications.
The MicroWriter ML3 products are a range of photolithography machines designed for rapid prototyping and small volume manufacturing in R&D laboratories and clean rooms. Conventional approaches to photolithography are usually based on exposing through a chromium-glass mask manufactured by specialist vendors. In R&D environments it is often necessary to change the mask design frequently. Direct-write lithography tools overcome this problem by holding the mask in software. Rather than projecting light through a physical mask, direct-write lithography uses computer-controlled optics to project the exposure pattern directly onto the photoresist. The MicroWriter ML3 family comprises four compact, high-performance, direct-write optical lithography machines which are designed to offer unprecedented value for money in a small laboratory footprint.
The range of applications of the MicroWriter ML3 products is vast and includes spintronics, microfluidics and microbiology, graphene and other 2-dimensional materials, MEMS and micro-optics. The systems are fitted with high-quality infinity-corrected optics with the best level of chromatic aberration corrections, the minimum feature size is 400nm and the maximum writing area is 295mm x 295mm. The versatility of the MicroWriter ML3 and its usability are strong characteristics of the machine.

  • Nov/2020 11/11/2020 | 12:00 Webinar - NMR Relaxometry as a Tool for Understanding Adsorption in Heterogeneous Catalysis Abstract
The adsorption of liquids on solid surfaces can have serious implications on reaction efficiency in heterogeneous catalysis. NMR relaxometry is one of the few techniques that can provide detailed information on this adsorption process, and is therefore a powerful tool for the rational design and optimization of heterogeneous catalytic processes. In this presentation the theory of high field NMR relaxometry techniques, and their application to catalytic systems will be discussed. In cases where the interpretation of high field NMR relaxometry is ambiguous, fast field cycling (FFC) NMR is shown to be an excellent complementary technique. A case study of different liquids imbibed within γ-alumina is used to demonstrate the sensitivity of FFC NMR to the adsorption process, and to show how FFC NMR can provide a detailed insight into the adsorption and the liquid structuring occurring within the pore space.

  • Oct/2020 20/10/2020 | 11:00 Webinar - Characterization of magnetic thin films and nanostructures using a combined-Kerr effect magnetometer and microscope The NanoMOKE®3 is a high-sensitivity magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometer for the characterization of magnetic thin films and structured samples. The machine offers one of the highest sensitivity in the world for a MOKE with a resolution of 0.1mdeg of rotation, or 10-13 emu. The NanoMOKE®3 tool combines two systems in one: it is a magnetometer for the fast acquisition of hysteresis loops, and a Kerr microscope for the imaging of magnetic domains. The talk will cover a few of the possible applications of the system. For example how the technique can be useful to the study of the interlayer exchange coupling between single perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layers, or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in synthetic antiferromagnets. • Jul/2020 23/07/2020 | 11:00 Webinar - Fast Field-Cycling methods applied to imaging: an overview of the technology, methods and clinical results from Aberdeen Lionel Broche

Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, UK

    Email: l.broche@abdn.ac.uk

    Abstract
Fast Field-Cycling relaxometry is a powerful tool for the investigation of molecular dynamics that provides multi-scale information from milli-to nanometres, non-invasively. This offers interesting prospects as an imaging tool and multiple attempts have been tried in the past to make FFC MRI scanners. The FFC research group at the University of Aberdeen has been developing such systems over the last two decades and is now using a custom-made whole-body FFC imager for several clinical studies, including brain stroke, breast cancer and brain cancer, with the help of several partners. This presentation will introduce the technology developed by our team, its advantages and drawbacks, as well as the first results from the FFC imaging clinical studies, including FFC-NMR analyses of tissue samples.

  • Jul/2020 16/07/2020 | 10:00 Webinar - How to reveal the mechanism of translation diffusion by means of NMR relaxometry When discussing the advantages of NMR relaxometry we point out that the method provides information about  molecular  and  ionic  motion  in  a  broad  range  of  correlation  times  and  allows  to  reveal  the mechanism  of  the  motion. The  last  kind  of  information  is  associated  with  the  shape  of  the  spectral density  function,  being  Fourier  transform  of  the  corresponding  correlation  function.  The  correlation function has  a  strict  mathematical  definition –it  is  determined  by  the  form  of  the  probability  that  a particle  takes  the  position  x  at  time  t,  provided  it  was  at  the  position  x0  at  time  0.  The  conditional probability function can be obtained by solving diffusion equations with specific boundary conditions. As relaxation  rates  are  given  as  combinations  of  spectral  density  functions,  the  shape  of  the  relaxation dispersion profile is a fingerprint of the shape of the correlation function and, hence, the mechanism of motion. This concept sounds great, but it has numerous limitations. In reality, the conclusions from the data analysis can often be misleading and controversial.

  • Jul/2020 09/07/2020 | 12:00 Webinar - High Performance NMR Spectroscopy on the Bench: Latest Developments and Applications Speaker: Andrew Coy

    OVERVIEW
Benchtop NMR systems have become indispensable analytical lab instruments during the past few years. The ability to acquire high quality NMR spectra in the lab is saving enormous time and money for chemists who previously had to wait for NMR results from remote or centralized resources. Furthermore, having the NMR spectrometer next to your chemical reactor has made it possible to monitor chemical processes on-line and in real time, a type of study that is not accessible by conventional high-field NMR spectrometers.
This webinar will describe the latest applications and developments of the pre-eminent Spinsolve benchtop NMR spectrometer. Results from the all-new Spinsolve 80 ULTRA, featuring the highest homogeneity and field, will be shown. This model is specifically designed to enable the highest quality solvent-suppression, a requirement for many benchtop NMR applications.

  • Jul/2020 09/07/2020 | 11:00 Webinar - FFC-NMR Relaxometry in NanoMaterials Science by Dermot Brougham, UCD FastControlling the density and functionality of molecules adsorbed onto nanoparticles is critical for the development  of  smart  nanomaterials  for  biomedicine.  Surface  chemistry  strongly  influences  drug loading, the in vitroand in vivocolloidal stability andthe blood circulation times. In the case of magnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) the solvent interaction with the magnetic moments, mediated by the surface  chemistry,  generates  changes  in  the  local  NMR  signal  intensity  which  can  be  used  to  create image  contrast  in  MRI.  Hence 1H  NMR  relaxation  measurements  can  be  used  to  study  dynamics  of magnetic  moments1for  dispersed  particles  (fast  dynamics)  and  for  nanoparticle  assemblies  (slow dynamics). The application of FFC-NMR measurements to MNP suspensions can provide fundamental insights  into  ligand-ligand,  solvent-particle  and  particle-particle  interactions.  The  utility  of  this information in developing approaches to particle dispersion,2,3in understanding particle dissolution, in controlling  particle  assembly  into  functional  clusters4-6and  in  helping  understand  nanoparticle interactions with bio-systems willbe described.
