JDry Series Cryogen Free Dilution Refrigerators for Quantum Computing

Cryogen Free Dilution Refrigerator for quantum computing from Janis Research, ultra low temperature, cryogenic equipment. Photographer is Erik Lucero, Google. Used with permission. The JDry series of cryogen-free dilution refrigerators provide convenient and affordable cooling of devices to <10 mK temperatures. JDry models optimized for quantum computing applications can accept up to 270 semirigid cables. Janis congratulations Google on their groundbreaking achievement, the first practical demonstration of Quantum Supremacy. We are proud to supply the dilution refrigerators that cool Google's quantum processors.

Astronomy/detector cooling and general-purpose configurations are also available.

Standard Configuration

The Janis JDry series cryogen-free dilution refrigerator includes two standard models, both offering convenient push-button cooling to <10 mK using a single pulse tube cryocooler. The JDry-250-QT includes a 300 mm (12”) diameter cold plate and offers >250 µW @ 100 mK cooling power. The larger JDry-500-QPro is equipped with a 500 mm (20”) diameter cold plate, and offers >450 µW of cooling power. The powerful, fully automated NI LabVIEW™ based “JACoB” gas handling controller lets you run the system, without the system running your life!

Single Pulse Tube Cryocooler Design

Janis JDry dilution refrigerators require only a single pulse tube cryocooler to reach their rated temperature and cooling power specifications, even in the larger JDry-500-QPro configuration. By contrast, other manufacturers often resort to using a second cryocooler in their 400 µW refrigerators. Janis engineers achieved this breakthrough by tapping into excess cryocooler capacity; this often unused capacity is made available to intercept conductive heat loads. The result is a 50% reduction in scheduled cryocooler maintenance costs, and fewer opportunities for unscheduled mechanical problems.

Generous Wiring Provisions

The JDry-500-QPro includes (12) NW-100 experimental wiring ports, which can accommodate up to 270 semirigid cables. The smaller JDry-250-QT includes (2) NW-100 ports, and accommodates up to 54 semirigid cables.

Robust Construction

All Janis dilution refrigerators are designed and manufactured to provide a lifetime of reliable operation. Only silver brazing and TIG welding is used to fabricate the heat exchangers, mixing chamber, and all components of the refrigerator “core.” No soft solders are used in the mK region of the system, eliminating this historically common source of leakage in dilution refrigerators. In the unlikely event of a problem, the modular design of the dilution core enables simple access and maintenance of the system.

Convenient Automated Operation

Janis JDry dilution refrigerators include fully automated operation, via touch panel controller. The graphical user interface (GUI) provides intuitive information about the state of all valves, gauges, and pumps. The touch panel controller can be operated manually if desired, or in fully automatic mode via preconfigured scripts. An industrial strength National Instruments Linux based controller running LabVIEW™ ensures reliable system operation, including advanced power management features. An API programming language allows user-developed or third-party experimental software to interact with the LabVIEW™ system control software. All key operating features can be accessed remotely via Ethernet interface.

World Class Experience

Janis has been a world leader in the design and fabrication of complex cryogenic systems for nearly 60 years. We are the sole commercial manufacturer of dilution refrigerators in the USA, having accumulated over 17 years of experience providing dilution refrigerators to researchers around the world. Janis has special expertise in low vibration, UHV, high field dilution refrigerators optimized for STM. The RSI Invited Article describes one such system, and similar systems are now in use at many top research institutes worldwide. The JDry series of dilution refrigerators distills all that we have learned over the years into a reliable, convenient to operate system optimized for quantum computing research and applications.
